Building a Relationship with God

Many people wonder how they can build a relationship with God and I would like to offer my advice. I'm not your pastor or your youth leader, I am just a blog trying to give advice, so if anything I say conflicts with what they tell you, listen to them, not to me.
A great way to build your relationship with God is to spend just a few minutes every day reading your bible and praying. You don't have to pray or read your bible for hours at a time to have a relationship with God. Start with a bible verse or two a day, and let that turn into a chapter a day or even a few chapters a day. I also recommend reading a devotion in the morning or whenever you find time throughout the day, and most devotions will also include bible verses to go with them. Most bible apps today will include devotionals you can do, or you can purchase one such as Devote365 which is a book with 365 devotionals, so you can do a devotional a day for a whole year.
Another thing I would recommend is fasting. When people hear the word fasting they get nervous think about when Jesus fasted for 40 days in the wilderness, but you don't have to, and I don't recommend doing a 40 day fast. Fasting a meal or even certain foods or activities such as fasting soda or sweet tea if you're from the south like me, or doing a media fast from social media or movies and television. The most important thing to consider when doing a fast is why you are doing it. Fasting isn't something you should do to bend God's will to get you something, it is something you should do to kill the flesh and increase your spirit to overcome something you may be facing from the devil. Also before doing a fast you should talk to your pastor/youth pastor about it so they can be in prayer with and for you while doing it.
